About Institut Kraf Negara

IKN is an educational institution committed to producing knowledgeable and skilled human capital graduates in the field of crafts. First introduced in 1967, In the early stages, craft skills training was conducted at ten (10) Malaysian Craft Branches nationwide. For example, batik and silver metal training in Kelantan, weaving, weaving and copper training in Terengganu, ethnic crafts in Sarawak and Sabah, ceramics training in Perak, woodworking in Pahang and glass, bamboo and rattan crafts in Negeri Sembilan.

The training period is between 12 and 18 months with emphasis on skills only. In 1994, the training program was reviewed for the purpose of strengthening and standardizing existing courses, especially in terms of curriculum balance between skills and academics.

In 1996, in line with the review of the implementation of the training program in the 7th Malaysia Plan, the craft skills training program was centered at the Malaysian Craft Complex in Rawang, Selangor (then the PKKM headquarters) in two areas of skill namely batik and weaving. This program focuses on youths who are passing the Certificate of Education Malaysia (SPM). The duration of study is two (2) years. In 1999, the Malaysian Handicraft teamed up with the National Vocational Training Council (MLVK), now known as the Department of Skills Development, (JPK) in developing the skills training curriculum.

Since 2000, the field of study has expanded to six (6) majors namely Batik Craft, Weaving, Ceramics, Wood, Metal and Rattan. Students who have completed the training have been awarded the Craft Skills Certificate.
