Welcome to Delft University of Technology

The academic culture at TU Delft is defined by extreme technical rigor, practical project-based learning, and a highly demanding evaluation system.

  • The Binding Study Advice (BSA) - CRITICAL TO HIGHLIGHT: This is the most defining feature of the Dutch academic system. At TU Delft, your first year is essentially a trial period. Students must obtain a minimum number of academic credits (usually 45 out of 60 ECTS) by the end of their first year. If a student fails to meet this exact threshold, they receive a negative BSA, meaning they are officially expelled from the program and legally cannot re-register for it for four years.
  • Project-Driven & Analytical: The study culture does not rely on passive memorization. From week one, students are thrown into complex, hands-on engineering projects, working in teams to solve real-world technical problems. The workload is notoriously heavy and fast-paced.

The Campus Hub: The Mekelpark campus is massive, highly sustainable, and built around innovation. It features world-class laboratories, massive aerodynamic test facilities, and a deeply embedded startup culture where students are encouraged to patent their tech and launch companies.

📜 Entry Qualification

  • A-Levels
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
  • Conditional Entry:
    • STPM
    • UEC

📅 Registration Info

Applying to TU Delft is a multi-step process that requires navigating the centralized Dutch portal and understanding their unique ""capped"" degree system.

  • The Studielink Portal: International students cannot apply straight to the university first. You must initially register your details and choose your program through Studielink, the official Dutch national higher education database. Afterward, you will receive login details to finish your application on TU Delft’s internal Osiaan/MyTUDelft portal.
  • Numerus Fixus (CRITICAL): Many of TU Delft's most popular English-taught Bachelor’s programs (such as Aerospace Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering) are Numerus Fixus. This means there is a strict cap on the number of students they accept globally.
    • If applying to a Numerus Fixus program, the strict, non-negotiable deadline is January 15. You will also have to complete a mandatory Selection Procedure (a series of online academic tests and questionnaires) in February/March to rank your academic aptitude.
  • Standard Deadlines: For non-Numerus Fixus programs (like Applied Earth Sciences), the deadline for non-EU students is typically April 1.
  • English Language Proficiency: If your high school was not taught entirely in an English-speaking country, you must submit an official language certificate. The standard requirement is an IELTS Academic overall score of 6.5 or a TOEFL iBT of 90.

💡 Test

This is where TU Delft is highly unique. For its most popular programs, it uses a strict capacity limit known as Numerus Fixus.

  • No General SAT/ACT: You do not need standard American admissions tests.
  • The Matching & Selection Procedure (Numerus Fixus): If a student applies for highly competitive English-taught programs like the BSc Aerospace Engineering or BSc Computer Science and Engineering, there is a strict cap on the number of students accepted. Everyone must participate in a mandatory, multi-step selection procedure:
    • Matching Assignments: Completing online modules and Math & Physics level tests to see if the program actually suits you.
    • Academic Aptitude Assessment: A personality and behavioral test focused on how you handle study situations.
    • The Selection Exam: A highly rigorous, proctored online exam testing your advanced Mathematics, Physics, and logical reasoning skills.
  • Your final score on this specific TU Delft Selection Exam determines your ranking number. Only the top-ranking students are offered a place.

More About Delft University of Technology

Quick Facts

  • This institution is the oldest and largest public technical university in the Netherlands and is a top-tier global leader in civil and structural engineering.
  • The campus is a sprawling ""knowledge park"" located just a short walk from the historic city center of Delft, featuring iconic modern landmarks like the grass-covered Library.

Postgraduate Study

Graduate students can choose from over 30 Master’s programs and numerous doctoral tracks, nearly all of which are taught in English and emphasize a hands-on, problem-solving approach to engineering.

Key Industry

The university anchors a massive innovation ecosystem, collaborating with industry giants like Shell, Airbus, and the Port of Rotterdam through dedicated "FieldLabs" and the TU Delft Science Park.

Post-study Work Opportunity

International graduates can apply for an "Orientation Year" residence permit (Zoekjaar), which grants them one year to live and work in the Netherlands without a separate work permit to launch their careers.

Accommodation

The university offers a dedicated housing service that partners with agencies like DUWO to provide furnished rooms, though availability is limited and prioritized based on a "first-paid, first-served" system for international students.
