Welcome to Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne

The academic culture at EPFL is highly prestigious, intensely theoretical, and notoriously demanding.

  • The First-Year Filter (L'année propédeutique): This is the most defining feature of the undergraduate experience here. The university admits a large number of students, but the first-year exams are brutally difficult. The pass rate is usually only around 30% to 40%. Students must be highly disciplined and mathematically gifted to survive this ""filter"" year.
  • STEM Exclusive: EPFL is a purely technical and scientific institute. The entire campus culture revolves around cutting-edge laboratories, tech innovation, engineering, and architecture.

The Campus: Located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, the campus is highly modern, featuring iconic architecture (like the Rolex Learning Center) and deep integration with global tech startups and research centers.

📜 Entry Qualification

  • A-Levels
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

📅 Registration Info

The application process for EPFL is highly specialized and relies entirely on their own independent portals.

  • The Application Portal: You do not use a centralized system to apply here. All applications must be submitted directly through the EPFL Online Application Portal. The application window typically opens in mid-November and closes firmly by late April for international students.
  • The Language Barrier (CRITICAL): This is the biggest hurdle for international students. The vast majority of undergraduate Bachelor's programs at EPFL are taught entirely in French. To register, an international applicant must upload an official French language certificate proving at least a B2 level of fluency (such as the DELF or TCF). However, realistically, a C1 level is highly recommended to survive the intense, fast-paced mathematics and physics lectures.
  • The Entrance Examination (Examen d'admission EPFL): If an international applicant's high school diploma does not perfectly match the strict Swiss equivalence rules (which is very common for international students, including STPM and UEC holders), EPFL will require them to pass a notoriously difficult entrance exam in August before they can enroll. The exam is conducted in French and strictly tests advanced Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

💡 Test

The testing requirements depend entirely on how perfectly high school qualifications match their rulebook.

  • Path A - No Entrance Exam: If your A-Levels or IB diploma perfectly match their strict subject lists and minimum grades, you do not need to take any general admissions tests.
  • Path B - The EPFL Admission Examination: If your A-Level subjects are slightly off, or if you hold an STPM/UEC certificate, you must take their official entrance exam. This is a notoriously difficult test covering advanced Mathematics and Physics.
  • Path C - The CMS Preparatory Year: Instead of direct entry, the university may require you to pass the Cours de mathématiques spéciales (CMS). This is an intensive, one-year preparatory course in math and physics that you must pass to join the standard Bachelor's program.

★★★★

"Great place to study. The residential colleges are comfortable and the new campus has great modern tech. The only downside is that the town is quite small, so entertainment options are a bit limited, but it forces you to focus!"
