Welcome to Kyoto University

The academic culture at Kyoto University is famously defined by its core philosophy of ""Academic Freedom"" (Jiyu no Gakufu).

  • Independent and Research-Driven: The university is a massive powerhouse for fundamental research and science, having produced numerous Nobel Laureates. The study culture here does not rely on handholding; students are given an immense amount of independence and are heavily encouraged to pursue their own unique, unconventional research interests from the very beginning.
  • The Cultural Hub: The main Yoshida Campus is in Kyoto, the ancient imperial capital of Japan. The student lifestyle is an incredible mix of studying in ultra-modern research laboratories while living in a city surrounded by thousands of classical temples, shrines, and historical monuments.
  • Intensely Intellectual: The student body is exceptionally driven. The environment is highly intellectual, debate-focused, and deeply committed to long-term academic discovery rather than just short-term corporate job training.

📜 Entry Qualification

📅 Registration Info

Applying to Kyoto University as an international student is usually done through their flagship English/Japanese bilingual track.

  • The Kyoto iUP (International Undergraduate Program): This is the most popular and accessible track for international students. You do not need to know any Japanese to apply! The program includes a 6-month preparatory course in the Japanese language, followed by the standard 4-year bachelor's degree (where classes gradually transition from English to Japanese).
  • The Application Timeline (Kyoto iUP): The application period is very early and incredibly strict. It typically opens in early November and closes by early December for enrollment in October of the following year.
  • The Application Portal: You apply directly through the Kyoto iUP Online Application System.
  • Standard Admissions (Japanese-Taught): If you already speak fluent Japanese and want to apply for regular degrees outside the iUP track, you must take the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission), submit a high JLPT N1 certificate, and take Kyoto's notoriously difficult secondary written entrance exams in February.
  • English Proficiency (for iUP): If your high school was not primarily taught in English, you must submit a standardized language score. Kyoto generally expects an IELTS Academic score of 6.5+ or a TOEFL iBT score of 90+.
  • The Interview: Shortlisted candidates who pass the initial document screening will be invited to a rigorous online interview (usually held in January or February). Professors will test your analytical skills, academic depth, and critical thinking.

💡 Test

The tests required depend entirely on which admission track the student applies for. This is crucial information to highlight on your website:

  • Track A: Kyoto iUP (International Undergraduate Program)
    • No General Entrance Exam: This flagship 4.5-year program is designed specifically for top-tier international students. Applicants do not take traditional Japanese entrance exams. They apply via a comprehensive document review (submitting their A-Level/STPM/UEC grades, personal essays, and school references).
    • The Interview: If shortlisted, the student must pass a highly rigorous formal interview (conducted online) assessing their academic knowledge, motivation, and critical thinking.
  • Track B: Standard Undergraduate Programs (Japanese-Taught)
    • EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission): International students applying for standard Japanese tracks must take the EJU (which has a testing center in Malaysia). This tests Japanese as a Foreign Language, Science, Japan and the World, and Mathematics.

Secondary Written Exam & Interview: After passing the EJU screening, students are typically required to take Kyoto University's own notoriously difficult written exams and pass an in-person interview.

★★★★

"Great place to study. The residential colleges are comfortable and the new campus has great modern tech. The only downside is that the town is quite small, so entertainment options are a bit limited, but it forces you to focus!"
