Welcome to National University of Singapore
The academic culture at NUS is famously rigorous, fast-paced, and highly competitive.
- The Modular System: NUS operates on a modular system (similar to the American college system). Students build their own timetables by picking ""modules"" (classes) each semester. This means there is a lot of continuous assessment—quizzes, group projects, essays, and presentations—throughout the semester, rather than just one massive final exam.
- The ""Bell Curve"" Grading: This is the most infamous part of the NUS culture. For many large modules, students are graded on a bell curve. This means your final grade isn't just based on how well you scored, but on how well you scored compared to everyone else in the class. This fosters a highly competitive environment.
- Global and Research-Focused: The university heavily emphasizes practical research, innovation, and a global mindset. Students are strongly encouraged to undertake internships and overseas exchange programs.
📜 Entry Qualification
- STPM
- UEC
- A-Levels
- International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
- Polytechnic Diplomas (from Singapore)
📅 Registration Info
Applying to NUS is done directly through their own university system, not through a centralized portal.
- The Portal: All applications are submitted online directly through the NUS Applicant Portal (via the Office of Admissions website).
- The Deadlines: Application windows depend entirely on the student's high school qualification:
- International Qualifications (STPM, UEC, IB Diploma): Applications usually open in late October or early December and close in late February.
- Singapore-Cambridge A-Levels: Applications usually open right after results are released and close in mid-March.
- Application Fee: A non-refundable fee of SGD 20 is required to submit the application.
- Admissions Outcome: Because NUS waits for all final exam results to be released, admission offers are typically sent out in batches between May and July.
💡 Test
Students applying with STPM, UEC, A-Levels, or the IB generally do not need to take the SAT or ACT.
However, specific, highly competitive courses require their own specialized tests and interviews:
- Medicine & Dentistry: Shortlisted candidates must pass a rigorous assessment process, which usually includes a Situational Judgement Test (SJT) and Focused Skills Assessment (FSA) / Interviews.
- Law: Shortlisted candidates must sit for a written test and a formal interview.
- Architecture & Industrial Design: Applicants are usually required to submit a creative portfolio and may be called for an interview.

"An amazing university with rich history and excellent facilities for education majors. The lecturers are very supportive, and the campus environment in Tanjong Malim is extremely peaceful and conducive for studying."
"Great place to study. The residential colleges are comfortable and the new campus has great modern tech. The only downside is that the town is quite small, so entertainment options are a bit limited, but it forces you to focus!"
