Welcome to Technical University of Munich

The academic culture at TUM is heavily defined by its official motto: ""The Entrepreneurial University.""

  • Industry Integration: Located in Bavaria—a massive European tech and automotive hub—TUM is deeply embedded with local industry giants (like BMW, Siemens, and Airbus). The study culture is incredibly practical; students are actively pushed to innovate, patent their research, and launch tech startups.
  • The Aptitude Assessment: TUM doesn't just look at whether you passed high school; they want to know if your specific talents match their demanding programs. They use a unique, two-stage evaluation process to filter students based on passion, technical skills, and academic rigor.

The Campus Vibe: TUM has a massive footprint. The main historical campus is in downtown Munich, while the sprawling, ultra-modern Garching campus (which houses the famous indoor slide in the Math/Computer Science building!) is located just outside the city. The lifestyle is a mix of intense study and vibrant Bavarian culture.

📜 Entry Qualification

  • A-Levels
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
  • STPM

📅 Registration Info

Applying to TUM is a multi-step, highly bureaucratic process that requires navigating both national portals and university-specific assessments.

  • The uni-assist Portal (VPD): International students cannot just apply straight to TUM. First, you must submit your high school transcripts to the national uni-assist portal to get a ""Preliminary Documentation"" (VPD), which converts your grades into the German grading system.
  • TUMonline Portal: Once you have your VPD, you submit your final application through the TUMonline system.
  • The Deadlines: * Winter Semester (Starts in October): Deadlines typically close firmly on July 15.
    • Summer Semester (Starts in April): Deadlines typically close firmly on January 15.
  • The Language Barrier (CRITICAL): The vast majority of undergraduate Bachelor's programs at TUM are taught entirely in German. International applicants must upload an official German language certificate proving at least a B2 or C1 level of fluency (such as the Goethe-Zertifikat or TestDaF). Only a tiny handful of Bachelor's programs (like Aerospace or Information Engineering) are taught in English, which require an IELTS of 6.5.
  • Aptitude Assessment (EFV): TUM does not use a standard cutoff grade. Instead, they use a two-stage Aptitude Assessment (Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren).
    • Stage 1: They calculate a score based on your high school grades and a mandatory Motivation Letter.
    • Stage 2: If your score is on the borderline, you will be invited to a mandatory admissions interview or a written entrance exam.

💡 Test

TUM’s admission process is unique because it uses the Aptitude Assessment (Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren - EfV) instead of a standard cut-off score.

  • Stage 1: The Dossier Review. Students submit their high school grades and a highly detailed Letter of Motivation (Personal Statement). TUM calculates a point score based on these documents. If the score is exceptionally high, the student is admitted directly.
  • Stage 2: The Assessment Interview/Test. If the student's Stage 1 score is in the middle range, they are invited to Stage 2. Depending on the specific faculty, this will either be a 20-minute formal interview (often online for international students) OR a written entrance exam testing their knowledge in mathematics and core sciences.

No General SAT/ACT: TUM does not require standard American admissions tests.

★★★★

"Great place to study. The residential colleges are comfortable and the new campus has great modern tech. The only downside is that the town is quite small, so entertainment options are a bit limited, but it forces you to focus!"
