Welcome to The London School of Economics and Political Science

The academic culture at LSE is heavily defined by its intense focus on the social sciences, its massive global influence, and its highly corporate, fast-paced environment.

  • The Social Science Powerhouse: LSE is entirely dedicated to the social sciences. You will not find standard degrees in medicine, engineering, or hard sciences here. The entire academic environment revolves around Economics, Politics, Law, International Relations, and Sociology.
  • The Heart of Central London: The campus is located in the Aldwych/Holborn area, directly nestled between London’s financial district (The City) and its political center (Westminster). Students do not live in a quiet university bubble; they are fully immersed in the hustle of a major global capital.
  • Intense and Independent: The study culture is highly rigorous, debate-driven, and heavily theoretical. Students are expected to be incredibly independent, reading vast amounts of academic literature outside of class. Furthermore, the student body is highly career-driven, with aggressive networking for corporate internships starting from the very first year.

📜 Entry Qualification

  • A-Levels
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
  • STPM
  • Malaysian Matriculation

📅 Registration Info

Applying to LSE follows the standard UK centralized system, but they have very specific internal assessment criteria.

  • The UCAS Portal: All undergraduate applications must be submitted directly through the UK's centralized UCAS system.
  • The Deadlines: The standard application deadline for all LSE undergraduate programs is strictly the end of January.
  • The Personal Statement (CRITICAL): Unlike many other institutions, LSE traditionally does not interview candidates. Your UCAS Personal Statement is the absolute most important part of your application after your grades. It must be heavily academic (at least 80% focused on your subject of interest) rather than focused on extracurriculars.
  • Admissions Assessments: While they don't interview, LSE relies on strict entrance exams for specific degrees:
    • Law: Applicants must take the LNAT (National Admissions Test for Law).
    • Economics/Mathematics: Applicants are heavily encouraged (and often required) to take the TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission).

English Language Proficiency: LSE demands a very high level of English. International applicants generally need an IELTS Academic overall score of 7.0 (with no sub-score below 7.0), or a TOEFL iBT of 100 (with high minimums in writing and reading).

💡 Test

For many years, LSE relied purely on grades and the UCAS personal statement. However, they have recently introduced mandatory testing for their most competitive courses.

  • TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission): This is highly critical for your website! For students applying to quantitative programs like the BSc Economics or BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, taking the TMUA is now mandatory.
  • LNAT (National Admissions Test for Law): All applicants for the undergraduate Law (LLB) degree must sit for the LNAT before applying.
  • UGAA (Undergraduate Admissions Assessment): If an applicant comes from a non-traditional educational background, LSE might specifically request that they sit for the UGAA (an internal LSE math and essay test) before making a final decision.
  • No Interviews: LSE does not typically interview applicants for standard undergraduate degrees. The decision is made entirely based on the paper application and standardized test scores.

★★★★

"Great place to study. The residential colleges are comfortable and the new campus has great modern tech. The only downside is that the town is quite small, so entertainment options are a bit limited, but it forces you to focus!"
