About Institut Pendidikan Guru - Kampus Bahasa Melayu
The Malay Campus Teacher Education Institute (IPGKBM) was established on January 12, 1958 as a College of Language Teaching (MPB) on the recommendation contained in the Razak Statement 1956 to establish a Language College (Language Institute): "Its function is to train teachers who will teach the Malay language and conduct research on the languages spoken in Malaya and its teaching." MPB is located at its temporary building in Bukit Smile, Johor Bahru, Johor Darul Takzim. In late 1958 MPB relocated to its permanent campus in the Valley of Kuala Lumpur. On February 12, 1959, the first college lecture was started. The MPB was formally opened by His Excellency the first His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni al-Marhum Tuanku Muhammad on June 4, 1959. MPB has undergone various phases of change in name, function, and physical development. MPB is now known as the Malay Campus Teacher Education Institute (IPGKBM).
IPGKBM serves as a center for pedagogical development and expansion of Malay language, literature, and regional culture. In line with its new function, IPGKBM is actively engaged in holding Malay Language Conventions, Pedagogical Workshops, Literature Courses, Language Grammar Courses, Art Courses in Education and Use of Information Technology in Malay Education for Malaysian teachers and full-time students studying through the Bachelor of Education Program (PISMP). The IPGKBM also serves as a reference point for government agencies, statutory bodies, and foreigners especially in the area of concern. Since 1998, IPGKBM has provided Malay language skills training to expatriates from Korea, Iran, Japan, Vietnam, India and others through individual guidance through Malay language courses for foreigners.
In addition, IPGKBM also provides immersive courses to Malay language teachers from Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, and southern Thailand through short courses focusing on aspects of pedagogy and grammar of the Malay language. IPGKBM lecturers are often invited to give lectures and present papers at home and abroad such as in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam. To date, the IPGKBM has 12 lecturers who hold a Doctoral Degree in various disciplines, especially in the field of Malay pedagogy, language and literature.
