What is Biotechnology?
Biotechnology is a branch of Biology that studies the technology of using living things on a large scale to produce products that have useful values for humans. At present, the application of biotechnology is growing rapidly. The things learned in this department include fermentation techniques, enzyme technology, microorganism analysis, DNA analysis, biological product separation and purification, plant tissue culture and genetic engineering. Biotechnology is useful for the health sector, including treating various diseases. While in the food sector, biotechnology can produce plant and food products that contain superior properties and better nutritional value than ordinary crops or food products. Over the past four decades, we have seen so rapidly the development of biotechnology in various fields. The rapid development of biotechnology is in line with the level of human needs on earth. This is understandable considering that Biotechnology promises a revolution in almost all aspects of human life, from agriculture, livestock and fisheries to health and medicine. This development is still very slow in Indonesia, so far behind other Asian countries such as India, China, Thailand and Korea.
Why did you choose this programme?
If you are interested in learning about the integration between biology and technology (such as about genetic engineering), this department might be the direction you are looking for.
